Girls Soccer Team

14th Feb 2014

On Monday 4th February St Joseph's Girl's Soccer team took part in an IFA tournament in Assumption Grammar School Ballynahinch.  The 5 aside tournament was played on the school's wonderful 3G surface in freezing cold conditions.  The girls ignored the cold and their size to finish second in the tournament!

In their first match they played out an exciting 2-2 draw with St Patrick's PS Ballynahinch.  They then followed this up with a wonderul 6-0 win against St Mary's PS Saintfield.  Their final group game was against Spa PS Ballynahinch and again St Joseph's came out convincing winners, 5-1.

The final was a repeat of their first game against St Patrick's Ballynahinch.  In very cold conditions the girls fell behind early on but fought back with a splendid goal from Lucia. St Patrick's scored another goal before half time to go in 2-1 up at the break.  In the second half St Joseph's pressed hard but could not get the equalising goal leaving St Patrick's as the inaugural winners of the IFA girls soccer tournament.

Despite losing in the final, the girls had a wonderul day and really enjoyed the competition.  Laura excelled in goals pulling off some wonderful saves and displaying great bravery.  Lucia proved to be our goal getter in chief with a fantastic six goals on the day.  Fionn and Paullette were rocks in defence with Paullette pushing forward to score the goal of the tournamnet from the half way line!!  Hannah and Catherine played around midfield and battled really hard for every ball along with Molly and Henrietta.  They all went home with a medal and certificate.  Above you can see their pyramid which they performed before the matches!! Well done to Fionn, Paulette, Catherine, Henrietta, Hannah, Lucia, Molly and Laura
